Stories of Cinema is a three-floor exhibition that presents the diverse, international, and complex stories of moviemakers, the works they create, and the impact their art has on the world. It explores narrative and documentary films, both animated and live-action, as well as the arts and sciences of moviemaking. While celebratory, the exhibition also seeks to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema.

The exhibition brought together a selection of the maelstrom of fantasy films that myth has fostered, from cutting-edge projects to blockbusters. It recounts the tensions between cinema and this myth, aware of the metamorphoses of the vampire that are intrinsically linked to the transformations of the cinematographic medium.

This exhibition displayed the original drawings and puppets used in Tim Burton’s movies, as well as some models, drafts and character studies used in the production of Mars Attaks! (1996), Corpse Bride (2005) and Frankenweenie (2012). The public was able to see first-hand the uncanny elements that were part of the creative process of some of Tim Burton’s gothic take on storytelling for children.

From original sketches drawn by Burton, to extensive props, sets and puppets, the exhibition showcased the artistic detail and vision that went into bringing this heartwarming tale to the big screen for 2012’s most highly anticipated animated movie.
